Description

Product description

This statue is a faithful replica of the celebrated Jockey of Artemision, one of the most important surviving sculptures of antiquity, currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. The original work was recovered from the Aegean Sea near Cape Artemision, where it had rested for centuries after a shipwreck. It captures a young jockey riding bareback at full gallop, his raised arm urging the horse forward in a moment of intense concentration and speed.

Created during the Hellenistic period, around 150–140 BCE, the sculpture reflects a radical shift in Greek art toward realism, movement, and emotional expression. The sculptor, whose identity remains unknown, achieved extraordinary naturalism through the horse’s extended stride and the rider’s forward-leaning posture. Rather than idealized stillness, the composition conveys urgency and competitive spirit, celebrating athletic excellence and human mastery over nature. Today, the original stands as a centerpiece of Greek sculpture, admired for its technical brilliance and dramatic energy.
