Ancient Greek helmets (in Greek cranos-i) fascinate us today because they reflect a part of the past and give us an insight into ancient societies and the modus operandi of their warriors. They could indicate social status, with the upper classes wearing elaborately embellished helmets. We can also observe the craftsmanship and technological progress in bronze processing. The evolution of efficiency, functionality and silhouette over the centuries is evident. As technology advanced artisans would create helmets from a single sheet, which made them faster to build, more elegant, comfortable and durable.

The ageing and patina on the surface of the bronze varies a lot depending on the conditions of the ground it was buried in. No two patinas are the same, and there is one for every taste. Others prefer the multi-colored effect of corrosion, while others prefer a more uniform effect. Some like the rough surface and some like a smoother finish. Hues range from verdigris to azure-blue, to deep red and various shades of brown. It also stands out for the golden color that can emerge and is called river patina.
Some helmets have what we call a “death blow”. You’ll find helmets with damage that makes someone wonder if it could be the result of combat, or the corrosion it suffered over the centuries.
Embossed or carved, decoration and ornamentation, emerge a whole new dimension, adding vibrancy and value to these creations. The helmets have a minimalism, and therefore the flexibility to be able to adapt and fit in a space. And while they attract, due to their anthropomorphic nature and the power of their eyes, at the same time they do not distract attention in everyday life.
