This bonded bronze hourglass features two winged lions, evoking Mesopotamian mythology, where lions symbolized power, protection, and divine authority. The ancient Mesopotamians, particularly the Assyrians and Babylonians, depicted lions in art, often as guardian figures at palace gates or temples. The winged lion, or Lamassu, combined human, eagle, and lion traits to ward off evil. Lions also appeared in royal hunting scenes, showcasing a king’s strength. The Babylonian Ishtar Gate prominently featured lion reliefs, honoring the goddess Ishtar.
