Description

Product description

Two monuments exist today in Thermopylae. The newest, called the Leonidas monument, is in honor of the Spartan king who fell there. It is engraved with his response to Xerxes's demand that they recognize his sovereignty over the lands of Lacedaemonia, symbolically handing over "land and water". It was two words "Molon lave". "Come and get them". The second monument, the ancient one, is a modest stele commemorating the battle that once took place there. The words of the poet Simonides of Ceos (556–468 BC) are engraved on it. His verses are perhaps the greatest epitaph of all warriors.

«Ω ξείν αγγέλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις ότι τήδε κείμεθα τοις κείνων ρήμασι πειθόμενοι».

"Stranger, report to Lacedaemonians that here we lie, obeying their will."
