Description

Product description

This statuette represents a hoplitodromos, the armed runner of ancient Greece, captured in full stride with shield raised and weapon poised. The original artefact was discovered at the sacred sanctuary of Dodona in Epirus, near modern Ioannina, one of the oldest religious centers dedicated to Zeus. Created during the Late Archaic period, around 520–500 BCE, such figures reflect both the military identity and athletic culture of ancient Greek society. The hoplitodromos race, introduced in the 6th century BCE, required athletes to run while carrying hoplite equipment, symbolizing endurance, discipline, and readiness for war. These statuettes were commonly dedicated as votive offerings, honoring the gods and commemorating personal achievement or military service. Produced in regions of northwestern Greece, they embody the transition toward more naturalistic and dynamic sculpture, celebrating the ideal of strength, motion, and devotion that defined the Greek warrior-athlete.
