This sculpture reproduces the celebrated Artemision Bronze, one of the most important surviving masterpieces of ancient Greek bronze sculpture. The original statue was discovered in the sea near Cape Artemision in northern Euboea, Greece, during underwater excavations in 1926–1928. Today it is preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, where it stands as a defining example of Early Classical Greek art.
Dating to around 460 BCE, the statue belongs to the Severe Style, a period that marked the transition from the rigid forms of Archaic sculpture to the naturalistic ideals of the Classical age. The figure depicts a powerful god poised to hurl a weapon. Because the original attribute is lost, scholars debate whether the figure represents Poseidon, throwing his trident, or Zeus, casting a thunderbolt.
Cast in bronze using the lost-wax technique, the sculpture demonstrates the technical mastery and dynamic composition characteristic of early Classical Greek bronze statuary.
