Discovered in Grave Circle A at Mycenae, Greece, and dating to approximately 1600–1500 BCE, this ceremonial sword belongs to the elite warrior burials of the early Mycenaean rulers. Today, the original is preserved in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, where it stands among the most celebrated artifacts of Bronze Age Greece.
The blade is distinguished by its dynamic lion imagery, rendered in precious metal inlay against the darkened surface of the bronze. Lions—symbols of dominance, royal authority, and heroic strength—stride across the blade in tense, fluid motion. The gold-covered hilt further emphasizes its ceremonial and aristocratic function. Strong Minoan artistic influence is evident in the naturalistic movement and refined metalwork techniques.
