Description

Product description

This sculpture is a replica of the renowned Antikythera Ephebe, one of the finest surviving examples of original Greek bronze sculpture from the Late Classical period. The statue depicts a youthful male figure—an ephebe, a young man on the threshold of adulthood—captured in a graceful contrapposto stance that reflects the naturalistic ideals of fourth-century BCE Greek art.

The original bronze was discovered in 1900 within the Antikythera shipwreck off the coast of Greece and is now preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Dating to approximately 340–330 BCE, the sculpture is widely considered a masterpiece of Peloponnesian bronze workmanship. Scholars have proposed that it may be the work of the Greek sculptor Euphranor or a workshop working in the classical tradition influenced by Polykleitos.

Although the exact subject remains debated—possibly the mythological hero Perseus, Paris holding the Apple of Discord, or a victorious athlete—the figure exemplifies the refined anatomy, balance, and expressive subtlety characteristic of Late Classical Greek sculpture. This reproduction captures the timeless elegance and historical significance of one of antiquity’s most remarkable bronze statues.
