Description

Product description

This replica represents a Geometric amphora inspired by the famous Dipylon amphorae produced in Athens during the Late Geometric period (around 760–750 BCE). The most celebrated example, attributed to the Dipylon Master, was discovered in the Kerameikos cemetery near the Dipylon Gate in Athens and is now preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

Amphorae of this monumental type were often created as funerary grave markers for elite burials, standing above tombs to commemorate the deceased. Their surfaces are densely covered with geometric patterns and stylized human figures arranged in narrative bands. Scenes frequently depict mourning rituals, processions, chariots, and warriors—symbols of status and remembrance within aristocratic Greek society.

Produced in Attic workshops, these vases illustrate the transition from purely abstract decoration toward early figurative storytelling in Greek art. They represent one of the earliest moments when individual vase painters, such as the Dipylon Master, can be recognized by style.
