Description

Product description

Vessels of this type were associated with elite burials and ceremonial use. The applied Gorgoneion—depicting the protective head of Medusa—served an apotropaic function, believed to ward off evil and safeguard both the living and the dead. The elegant proportions, arched handle, and sculptural attachments exemplify the technical mastery achieved by northern Greek workshops in the late 6th century BCE.

Emerging from the rich funerary culture of Derveni, this form stands as a testament to the artistry and symbolic power embedded in ancient Greek ritual objects.

Metal vases are far more rare than their ceramic counterparts because fewer were made and because the metal deteriorated or was melted down. Only about half a dozen complete bronze neck-amphorae are known. The side handles served for pouring, the swinging bail for lifting and carrying. The embellishment here is particularly masterful—not only the Gorgon's heads beneath the handles but also the beading, tongues, and lotos buds on the foot, lip, and handles.
