Description

Product description

This replica is inspired by a celebrated Attic white-ground lekythos attributed to the Achilles Painter, one of the most refined vase painters of Classical Athens. The original vessel, dated to ca. 445–430 BCE, is housed today in the Staatliche Antikensammlungen in Munich.

The scene portrays two Muses on Mount Helicon, the sacred mountain in Boeotia that ancient Greek tradition regarded as the dwelling place of the goddesses of poetry, music, and inspiration. One Muse sits on a rocky outcrop playing a kithara (lyre) while another stands beside her, quietly observing. Between them appears a small bird, commonly interpreted as a magpie or nightingale, a symbol associated with song and poetic inspiration.

Lekythoi were slender terracotta oil vessels produced in Athens and often used in funerary rituals, holding perfumed oils placed at graves. The delicate white-ground technique allowed painters like the Achilles Painter to create elegant, contemplative scenes reflecting the ideals of Classical Greek art.
