Description

Product description

This elegant vase is a faithful replica of a Classical Greek white-ground lekythos attributed to the Achilles Painter, one of the most refined vase painters of 5th-century BCE Athens. The original vessel, created around 440–435 BCE in Attica, is preserved today in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

Lekythoi were slender oil flasks made of terracotta with a white-ground slip, typically placed in graves and used in funerary rituals.

The painted scene depicts an intimate farewell between a seated Athenian woman and a departing hoplite warrior. The warrior stands with spear and shield, holding out his Corinthian helmet, while the woman sits in a domestic interior indicated by hanging objects such as a mirror and jug. The quiet gestures and restrained expressions convey the emotional gravity of departure—possibly a final goodbye before battle or death, a theme common in funerary imagery on white-ground lekythoi.

With its delicate line drawing and poignant narrative, the original vase is a celebrated example of Classical Athenian funerary art and the refined style of the Achilles Painter.
