Description

Product description

This replica of an Attic red-figure volute krater reflects a celebrated original preserved today in the Vatican Museums, Rome. Created in Athens during the Classical period (circa 450–440 BCE), such kraters were used for mixing wine and water at symposia—social gatherings central to Greek elite culture.

The scene depicts a mythological encounter: a youthful figure presenting the infant Dionysus to a seated, bearded god, likely Silenus, highlighting themes of divine protection and initiation. On the reverse, a lyre player performs between two draped women, evoking the refined musical traditions of Athenian society. The balanced composition, fluid linework, and expressive gestures exemplify the maturity of the red-figure technique developed in Attica.

These vessels were crafted in Athens and widely exported throughout the Mediterranean, serving both practical and ceremonial roles while conveying stories of gods, music, and ritual life.
