Description

Product description

The Corinthian helmet is one of the most recognizable symbols of ancient Greek warfare, originating in the powerful city-state of Corinth during the Archaic period. First developed around the 8th–7th century BCE, this helmet became the signature armor of the Greek hoplite—the heavily armed infantry soldier who fought in the disciplined phalanx formation. Its distinctive design covered the entire head, leaving narrow openings for the eyes and mouth while extending to protect the neck and cheeks.

Helmets of this type were widely used throughout Greece and later across the Mediterranean, including southern Italy and Sicily where Greek colonies flourished. Often adorned with a crest plume and decorative motifs such as the meander pattern—an ancient symbol of infinity and unity—the helmet represented both protection and status. Original examples from the 6th–5th centuries BCE are preserved today in major institutions such as the British Museum, the Louvre, and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
