Description

Product description

This sculptural replica represents the famous Phaistos Disc, one of the most intriguing artifacts of the Minoan civilization. The original was discovered in 1908 at the Minoan palace complex of Phaistos on the island of Crete. Dating to approximately 1700–1600 BCE, during the Middle to Late Bronze Age, the disc is widely associated with the height of Minoan cultural development. Today, the original artifact is preserved in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

The disc is distinguished by its spiral arrangement of stamped symbols—human figures, animals, tools, and abstract signs—impressed into clay before firing. Unlike other Minoan scripts such as Linear A, the symbols on the Phaistos Disc remain undeciphered, making it one of archaeology’s enduring mysteries. Scholars debate whether it represents a hymn, prayer, calendar, or administrative record. Created in a sophisticated palatial society that thrived on maritime trade across the Aegean, the disc reflects the artistic innovation and symbolic complexity of Bronze Age Crete.
