Description

Product description

This bonded bronze replica depicts Perseus triumphantly holding Medusa’s severed head, based on Benvenuto Cellini's 16th-century masterpiece (1545–1554). The original is a Mannerist marvel in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria. Standing on a detailed pedestal, Perseus is poised, gripping a sword, with Medusa's lifeless body beneath him. The statue was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici to symbolize his power. Perseus, guided by Athena and Hermes, slew Medusa using her reflection in his shield to avoid her petrifying gaze. He then used her head as a weapon in later adventures. The original still captivates viewers in Florence’s Loggia dei Lanzi.
