Mask of Agamemnon 19 cm

This sculptural replica represents the famed Mask of Agamemnon, discovered in 1876 by Heinrich Schliemann within Grave Circle A at the ancient citadel of Mycenae. Dating to the Late Bronze Age (circa 1550–1500 BCE), the original mask predates the legendary Trojan War and is associated with the powerful Mycenaean civilization that flourished in mainland Greece. Today, the authentic funerary mask is housed in the National Archaeological Museum.

Although named after the mythical king Agamemnon, leader of the Greek forces in Homeric epic, the mask actually belongs to an earlier Mycenaean ruler. It was placed over the face of a deceased nobleman as part of elite burial customs, symbolizing status, authority, and reverence for the dead. Crafted during a period of expanding trade and military strength, such masks were used in royal shaft graves to honor powerful leaders. This replica captures the stylized beard, almond-shaped eyes, and serene expression that have become enduring symbols of Mycenaean artistry and early Greek civilization.
