Description

Product description

This helmet is a faithful replica of the helmet worn by the bronze statue known as the Athena of Piraeus, one of the best-preserved large-scale Greek bronze sculptures to survive from antiquity. The original statue was discovered in 1959 in the ancient harbor of Piraeus and is now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, where it remains a key reference for the study of Classical Greek bronze sculpture. The statue is dated to the 4th century BCE, during the Late Classical period, and is attributed to an unknown Greek sculptor, possibly working within the artistic circle of Euphranor. Athena is shown wearing a high Attic helmet with a pronounced crest, enriched with symbolic figures including a snake and a griffin—emblems traditionally associated with wisdom, protection, and divine authority. Helmets of this type reflect both martial equipment used by Greek hoplites and the idealized imagery of the goddess as protector of the city. The Athena of Piraeus offers rare insight into original Greek bronze workmanship and the visual language of divine warfare in Classical Greece.
