Inspiration: With 23.000 infantry and 3.500 cavalry, Romans defeated the forces of the Greek Federation in Corinth, the year 146 BC, in the last of a series of battles. The end of the wars, signals the beginning of the Graeco-Roman culture. During this period Romans assimilated in Greek culture and the Greek way prevailed. “Captive Greece held captive her uncouth conqueror and brought the arts to the rustic Latin lands.” (Horace Epistles 2.1 156-157).
Chessmen background: Inspired specifically by the period known as Greco - Roman, during which fierce civil and foreign wars broke up. The aggressiveness of the pawn and the impatience of the knight fully represent the ferocity of the warfares. The proud posture of the king and queen indicates their leadership. The vigilant bishop reveals his consideration for the formations of the imminent battle. Finally the castle is a reproduction of the Corinthian pillar which characterized the architectural style during that period.
