Description

Product description

This bonded bronze figure represents Charon, the boatman of the underworld in Greek mythology. Cloaked in darkness, he wields a sword and lantern, guiding souls across the Acheron River. Charon ferried the dead who paid him an obolus, a coin placed in their mouths upon burial. The Acheron, known as the “River of Woe,” was believed to be a passage to Hades, where souls reached their final judgment. Flowing through Epirus, Greece, the river was mythologized as a boundary between life and death. This sculpture captures Charon’s ominous role as the gatekeeper of the afterlife’s journey.
