Born from Zeus and the mortal Semele, Dionysus was the only Olympian with a mortal mother. Hera tricked Semele into seeing Zeus’s true form, causing her death. Zeus saved the unborn Dionysus by sewing him into his thigh until birth. As a god of revelry and transformation, he inspired both joy and madness. His cult, famous for wild celebrations, emphasized freedom, artistic inspiration, and the mysteries of life.
