Description

Product description

This lekythos reproduces a celebrated Attic black-figure vase depicting the myth of Herakles and Atlas, a subject associated with the hero’s quest for the Golden Apples of the Hesperides during his legendary labors. In the scene, Atlas—the Titan condemned to hold up the heavens—momentarily retrieves the sacred apples while Herakles temporarily bears the weight of the sky. This dramatic moment from Greek mythology symbolized strength, cunning, and the endurance of heroic trials.

Original lekythoi of this type were produced in Attica, particularly Athens, during the Archaic period around 525–475 BCE and are attributed to painters such as the Athena Painter. These vessels were created using the black-figure technique, in which dark silhouettes were painted and incised to reveal fine details of anatomy, garments, and mythological attributes.

Lekythoi were typically used as oil containers, often placed in funerary contexts or used in ritual offerings. Their mythological scenes connected everyday objects with heroic narratives central to ancient Greek religion and culture.
