Archaic Geometric Horse 9 x 9 cm

This replica is modeled after Geometric period horse figurines of the 8th century BC, examples of which are preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other major collections. Such figures originated in Attica and other parts of ancient Greece during the Geometric era (900–700 BC), a formative period in Greek art marked by stylized forms and linear decoration. Horses held deep symbolic meaning in early Greek society. They represented status, wealth, and heroic identity, often associated with aristocratic warriors and epic tradition. Small horse statuettes like this were commonly dedicated as votive offerings in sanctuaries, particularly at major religious centers such as Olympia and Athens. The elongated neck, arched tail, and simplified, rhythmic contours reflect the abstract aesthetic of the Geometric style, where emphasis was placed on pattern, proportion, and symbolic presence rather than naturalism.
