Description

Product description

This sculpture represents the legendary combat between Theseus, hero of Athens, and the Minotaur, the fearsome creature confined within the Labyrinth of Crete. The myth recounts how Theseus volunteered to end the tribute of Athenian youths sacrificed to King Minos. With the aid of Ariadne’s thread, he navigated the labyrinth, slew the Minotaur, and restored honor to Athens.

The theme was especially prominent in 5th century BCE Athens during the Classical period, when the city celebrated Theseus as a symbol of civic unity, strength, and democratic identity. Sculptural representations of the struggle adorned public spaces and sanctuaries, most notably the Hephaisteion (Temple of Hephaestus) in the Athenian Agora, where metopes depicted scenes from the hero’s deeds. Such works were created and displayed throughout Attica, reflecting both religious devotion and political pride. The composition captures the dramatic tension and idealized anatomy characteristic of Classical Greek art, embodying the balance between myth, artistry, and civic symbolism.
