Narcissus is a central figure in Greek mythology whose story explores the dangers of vanity and self-obsession. Renowned for his extraordinary beauty, Narcissus rejected the affection of all who loved him, including the nymph Echo, whose unreturned devotion led to her fading away until only her voice remained. His cruelty toward others did not go unnoticed by the gods.

As punishment, Nemesis caused Narcissus to fall in love with his own reflection after he encountered it in a pool of still water. Unable to possess the image he adored and unaware that it was his own, Narcissus became consumed by longing. He remained transfixed, neglecting all else, until he ultimately wasted away. In death, he was transformed into the flower that bears his name.
