Description

Product description

This replica represents an Archaic Greek akontistes (javelin thrower), inspired by bronze votive statuettes discovered at the Sanctuary of Dodona in Epirus, northwestern Greece. Dating to the 6th century BC, such figures were dedicated to Zeus at one of the oldest oracular sanctuaries in the Greek world. Original examples from Dodona are housed today in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

The athlete is shown in a dynamic stride, torso extended and arm drawn back, preparing to launch the javelin. This poised moment captures both physical discipline and controlled energy—key ideals of Archaic Greek athletics. Small bronze athletes were commonly offered as votive dedications, either in prayer for victory or in gratitude for success in competition. Produced in regional workshops across Epirus and other Greek bronze-working centers, these figures reflect the stylized proportions and rhythmic movement characteristic of Archaic art. Beyond sport, they symbolize aretē—excellence of body and spirit—celebrating the athletic ideal central to ancient Greek identity.
