Dioskouros (Castor or Pollux) 21,5 cm

This sculpture represents one of the Dioskouroi, the divine twin brothers Castor and Pollux, sons of Leda and closely associated with Zeus in Greek mythology. Revered as protectors of sailors, warriors, and travelers, the twins symbolized brotherhood, loyalty, and heroic virtue. Their cult was widespread across the Greek world, particularly in the Peloponnese and at major sanctuaries.

The most notable early sculptural representations of the Dioskouroi date to the Archaic period, including dedications discovered at the Sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi, created around 580–560 BCE. These figures reflect the stylized features of Archaic Greek art—rigid posture, patterned hair, and balanced proportions—while emphasizing their role as ideal horsemen. Such statues were erected as votive offerings and public monuments throughout mainland Greece, especially in regions like Sparta where the twins held special civic importance. The image of the mounted Dioskouros conveys both divine protection and aristocratic valor, embodying the religious devotion and artistic development of early Greek civilization.
