Protoattic Geometric Amphora Vase 45 cm

This replica is inspired by early Protoattic amphorae produced in Athens, Attica, during the transition from the Late Geometric to the Early Orientalizing period around 700–680 BCE. Amphorae of this type were tall storage and ceremonial vessels used for transporting liquids such as oil and wine, but they also played an important role in funerary rituals and grave markers in ancient Greece. Archaeological examples from Attica, including pieces now preserved in major collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other European museums, display similar decorative bands with chariots, horses, and stylized human figures.

These scenes reflect the aristocratic culture of early Greek society, where horse breeding, chariot racing, and heroic imagery symbolized status and prestige. The dense geometric patterns and narrative friezes represent the artistic shift from purely abstract decoration toward storytelling imagery that would later define Archaic Greek vase painting.

Amphorae like this were crafted in Attic workshops and widely used in sanctuaries, households, and burial contexts across ancient Greece.
