This replica represents Zeus Aigiochos, the “Aegis-Bearing Zeus,” a celebrated type originating from the Sanctuary of Dodona in Epirus, northwestern Greece. The original statuette, dated to the Early Classical period around 480 BC, is preserved in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Dodona was one of the most ancient oracular centers of the Greek world, second only to Delphi, where Zeus was worshiped as a prophetic and sovereign deity.

In this dynamic pose, Zeus strides forward, arm extended to hurl his thunderbolt while the other arm once held the aegis, symbol of divine authority and storm power. Such figures were created as votive offerings, dedicated by worshippers seeking protection, guidance, or favor from the king of the gods. This sculptural type reflects the transition from Archaic rigidity to the emerging naturalism of the Early Classical era, capturing strength, balance, and divine motion. It embodies both religious devotion and the artistic refinement of 5th-century BC Greece.
