This sculptural replica represents the ancient Greek Triērēs (trireme), the dominant warship of the Classical period and a symbol of Athenian naval power. Triremes were extensively built and used in Athens during the 5th century BCE, particularly throughout the Persian Wars and the Peloponnesian War. The naval base of Piraeus served as the heart of this maritime empire, housing fleets that secured trade routes and defended the Greek world.
Powered by three tiers of oarsmen, the trireme was engineered for speed, agility, and ramming capability. Its lightweight hull and bronze-sheathed ram made it a decisive instrument in battles such as the Greek victory at Salamis in 480 BCE. Triremes were constructed across the Aegean region but reached their peak development in Athens, where naval strength underpinned democracy and imperial expansion. This replica captures the elegant curved prow, commanding sail, and rhythmic oar formation that defined one of antiquity’s most formidable warships.
