Zeus of Artemision 54 cm

This statue is a replica of the famous Zeus of Artemision, one of the most celebrated masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture, currently displayed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. The original was recovered from the sea near Cape Artemision in northern Euboea, where it likely sank during a shipwreck while being transported. The figure depicts Zeus at the moment before hurling a thunderbolt, his arms outstretched in perfect balance, embodying authority, control, and restrained force.

Created during the Early Classical period, around 460–450 BCE, the sculpture reflects the transition from Archaic rigidity to naturalistic movement and anatomical precision. The sculptor remains unknown, though the work is often associated with the Severe Style that followed the Persian Wars. Every element of the composition emphasizes harmony between power and calm, presenting the god as both ruler of Olympus and idealized embodiment of the human form. Today, the statue stands as a defining symbol of Classical Greek art and divine representation.
