This finely cast bronze statue honors Zeus Lykaios, an archaic cult image inspired by votive figures found at the sanctuary on Mount Lykaion in the Peloponnese region of Arcadia, Greece. Mount Lykaion was one of the most ancient worship sites for Zeus in the Greek world, with rituals and festivals (the Lykaia) attested from the early Iron Age through the Classical era, and literary sources associating the mountain with the god’s mythic origins and wolf-related rites.
Excavations at the summit have revealed small bronze figurines of seated Zeus and ritual deposits dating as early as the 7th–6th century BCE, and possibly linked to a longer tradition of cult activity on the mountain. This replica captures the spirit of those votive figures once offered by ancient worshippers, embodying the power and majesty of Greece’s king of the gods as he might have been envisioned in Arcadian sanctuaries during the Archaic through Hellenistic periods.
