In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was a clever and defiant king who repeatedly challenged the authority of the gods. Known for his cunning, he betrayed divine secrets, deceived Hades, and even managed to escape death—twice. His most infamous act was tricking Thanatos, the personification of death, chaining him and temporarily halting mortality itself. This disruption of the natural order enraged the gods, particularly Zeus, who saw Sisyphus as a threat to divine authority.

As punishment, Sisyphus was condemned to an eternal and futile task in the underworld: endlessly pushing a great boulder uphill, only for it to roll back down just before reaching the top. The punishment was not simply physical but psychological, designed to deny him completion, reward, or escape. Over time, the myth came to symbolize the consequences of hubris and defiance, while also inspiring philosophical interpretations about endurance, rebellion, and the search for meaning. Sisyphus remains one of mythology’s most enduring figures—a reminder of both human arrogance and resilience in the face of unending struggle.
