Panathenaic Prize Amphora of Athena and Stadion Runners 25 cm

This museum-inspired replica is based on a celebrated Panathenaic prize amphora attributed to the Euphiletos Painter, created in Athens (Attica), Greece, around 530 BCE during the Archaic period. The original vessel, now preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, belongs to a special class of amphorae awarded as prizes at the Panathenaic Games, a major festival honoring the goddess Athena, patron deity of Athens.

Panathenaic amphorae followed a standardized design: one side depicts Athena Promachos, the warrior aspect of the goddess, standing armed with spear and shield between ceremonial columns. The reverse side illustrates the athletic contest for which the prize was awarded—in this case a stadion footrace, one of the earliest Olympic-style events in Greek athletics.

These amphorae originally contained valuable olive oil from the sacred groves of Athena, making them both prestigious trophies and valuable commodities. Produced in workshops of Attica, they reflect the enduring black-figure artistic tradition that remained the official style for Panathenaic prize vessels even after other vase-painting styles evolved.
