This Cycladic idol reflects the refined abstraction of Early Bronze Age art in the Cyclades during the Early Cycladic II period (circa 2800–2300 BCE). Characterized by its elongated proportions and folded-arm posture, the figure embodies the canonical type associated with ritual and funerary practices across the Aegean.
Its ornamentation lies in its restraint: a triangular, upturned face with a sharply defined nose in relief; a long, elegant neck flowing into gently sloping shoulders; and arms folded across the abdomen in a gesture of serenity and containment. The smooth, planar surfaces and minimal anatomical detailing emphasize balance and symmetry rather than realism. Subtle incisions define the legs and feet, reinforcing the sculptural clarity typical of Cycladic craftsmanship.
Such idols were primarily discovered in graves on islands including Naxos, Paros, and Amorgos, suggesting a symbolic or protective role in burial rites. Their timeless, almost modern aesthetic has influenced artists centuries later, yet their origins remain deeply rooted in the spiritual life of the prehistoric Aegean world.
