Corinthian Helmet with Griffin Emblem 8 cm

This sculpture represents the Corinthian helmet, the most iconic helmet worn by Greek hoplite warriors during the Archaic period (7th–6th century BCE). The helmet type originated in Corinth in the Peloponnese and soon spread across mainland Greece, becoming standard equipment for citizen-soldiers fighting in the famous phalanx formation. Original examples are preserved in major collections such as the The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the The British Museum, where they illustrate the evolution of Greek military equipment.

A defining feature of this example is the griffin emblem decorating the cheek guard. In ancient Greek art, the griffin—a powerful mythical creature combining the body of a lion with the head and wings of an eagle—symbolized vigilance, divine protection, and strength. The creature appears frequently in Archaic Greek decorative arts and was associated with guardianship of sacred spaces and valuable treasures.

The combination of the protective helmet form and the griffin motif reflects the close relationship between warfare, mythology, and symbolism in ancient Greek culture, where martial equipment often carried imagery intended to inspire courage and ward off danger.
