Alexander the Great Portrait 38 cm

This sculptural portrait depicts Alexander the Great, the legendary king of Macedonia whose conquests transformed the ancient world and initiated the Hellenistic age. The figure is inspired by a well-known sculpture discovered in Pella, the ancient Macedonian capital and birthplace of Alexander.

The original statue is preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Pella in Greece and dates to the 4th century BCE, the era of Alexander’s reign. The work is carved in marble and reflects the portrait tradition associated with Lysippos, the renowned sculptor who served as Alexander’s official court artist. Lysippos established the ruler’s iconic image: youthful, idealized, and expressive, with a characteristic upward gaze symbolizing ambition and heroic destiny.

Although many ancient sculptures survive only in fragments, these remains continue to convey the elegance and realism that defined late Classical Greek sculpture. This representation captures the enduring image of one of history’s most influential figures and reflects the artistic heritage of ancient Macedonia.
