The Wrestlers 20 x 11 cm

This sculptural wrestling scene is inspired by ancient Greek representations of pálē, the prestigious combat sport practiced in gymnasia and celebrated at the Panhellenic Games. The original artistic models for such compositions are closely associated with Olympia, the sacred sanctuary of Zeus and birthplace of the Olympic Games. From the 6th to the 4th century BCE, wrestling was a central event in Greek athletic culture, valued not only for physical strength but for discipline, balance, and tactical intelligence.

Comparable bronze and relief depictions have been discovered across mainland Greece, particularly in the Peloponnese and Attica, where athletes trained and competed as part of civic and religious life. These works were often dedicated as votive offerings to the gods or displayed in public spaces to commemorate victory and excellence (aretē). The interlocked bodies and forward-leaning stances reflect Classical Greek ideals of proportion, movement, and harmony, transforming athletic struggle into an expression of artistic and moral perfection.
