Archaic Griffin Protome from Samos 10 cm

This sculpture represents a Greek Griffin Protome, a decorative attachment originally mounted on the rim of large ritual cauldrons produced during the Archaic Greek period, around the 7th century BCE. Archaeological and museum studies indicate that many of these striking griffin heads were crafted by East Greek workshops, particularly on the island of Samos, a major center of metalworking during the Orientalizing period.

In antiquity, such griffin protomes were riveted to the shoulders of monumental cauldrons that stood on tripods or stands. These vessels were prestigious offerings dedicated in important sanctuaries, including Olympia and the Heraion of Samos. The mythical griffin—combining the beak of an eagle with the power of a lion—was believed to possess apotropaic qualities, symbolically guarding sacred spaces and protecting offerings to the gods.

Hundreds of these dramatic attachments have been discovered across the Mediterranean world, reflecting the wide influence of East Greek craftsmanship and the spread of Near Eastern mythological imagery into early Greek art. Today, original examples are preserved in major museum collections, where they remain among the most iconic creations of early Greek metalwork.
