Archaic Corinthian Helmet 7 cm

This sculpture represents the famous Corinthian helmet, one of the most recognizable forms of armor from ancient Greece. The original helmets of this type were produced during the Archaic period, roughly the 7th–6th century BCE, and are strongly associated with the city-state of Corinth in the Peloponnese. Archaeological examples of these helmets are preserved today in institutions such as the The Walters Art Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Art, where they are identified as essential elements of the hoplite warrior’s equipment.

The Corinthian helmet formed part of the hoplite panoply, worn by heavily armed infantry who fought in the tightly organized phalanx formation. Its design enclosed most of the head and face, leaving narrow openings for the eyes and mouth while extending cheek guards and a nose guard for protection.

Originally crafted from a single hammered bronze sheet by Greek armorers, these helmets were used widely across mainland Greece—including Sparta, Corinth, and other city-states—from the Archaic into the early Classical period. Some surviving examples were later dedicated in sanctuaries as offerings to the gods after battle, symbolizing victory, honor, and devotion.
