This bonded bronze statue depicts Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of mummification and the afterlife, holding the scales of Ma’at. On the scales, a heart is weighed against a feather, symbolizing truth and justice. This ritual, the "Weighing of the Heart," determined whether the deceased was pure enough to enter the afterlife. Anubis, often portrayed with a jackal head, guided souls and protected tombs. He was worshiped predominantly during the Old Kingdom (c. 2686–2181 BCE) and retained significance in later periods.
