The original example is preserved in the <strong data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1333\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Munich Museum of Antiquities<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and is documented by the <strong data-start=\"1359\" data-end=\"1400\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Classical Art Research Centre<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1443\" data-end=\"1766\">The ancient vessel was made of <strong data-start=\"1474\" data-end=\"1488\">terracotta<\/strong> using the <strong data-start=\"1499\" data-end=\"1534\">white-ground painting technique<\/strong>, a refined method frequently used for <strong data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1594\">funerary lekythoi<\/strong> in Classical Athens. These oil flasks were placed in graves and used to hold small amounts of perfumed oil offered to the deceased.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1768\" data-end=\"2195\">The scene depicts <strong data-start=\"1786\" data-end=\"1796\">Hermes<\/strong>, messenger of the gods and guide of souls, seated beside the rocky landscape of the <strong data-start=\"1881\" data-end=\"1895\">River Styx<\/strong>. Holding his <strong data-start=\"1909\" data-end=\"1921\">caduceus<\/strong>, he gestures toward a woman who adjusts a crown upon her head while approaching the tomb monument decorated with ribbons.
