Today, the authentic funerary mask is housed in the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">National Archaeological Museum<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"688\" data-end=\"1287\">Although named after the mythical king Agamemnon, leader of the Greek forces in Homeric epic, the mask actually belongs to an earlier Mycenaean ruler. It was placed over the face of a deceased nobleman as part of elite burial customs, symbolizing status, authority, and reverence for the dead. Crafted during a period of expanding trade and military strength, such masks were used in royal shaft graves to honor powerful leaders.
